HAND EVALUATION 50
Hand Evaluation in Slams
Part 5 of 7

Splinters can also be used by opener when he has support for partner's suit, the requirements being almost the same:
- Four-card support for partner's suit.
- A singleton or void.
- Enough high-card strength for game (at least 15 HCP).
The only slight difference is that you require 15 HCP; since you are the opening bidder, to be able to make game you are likely to need 15 HCP anyway.
Here is an example:
After East's 1 response, West needs to decide on the best way to show support. A raise to 4 is one option (you hold a 5-loser hand), but you should always try to avoid non-descriptive jumps to game on strong hands (for the same reason why you should avoid jumps to 3NT, as we have seen earlier in this book). 3 is a good bid: it is the same as bidding 4 (it says: 'Partner, we can make game in hearts.'), but it also shows the shortage in spades; it is an example of a splinter bid at the three level.
Over 4, I am pretty sure East would have passed, but, over 3, East is looking at a beautiful hand: his ace is perfect opposite West's singleton, so he can envisage no losers in the major suits and partner has suggested plenty of strength, so it does not take much to imagine just one loser in the minors. A 4NT ace-enquiry would not necessarily elicit the answer he wants (East-West could have two diamond losers between them), so his best response is to express interest in a slam by not bidding the agreed suit. Ideally East should make a cue-bid: 4 shows his ace of spades and says: 'Partner, I am excited!'
West is happy to take over and bids Key-card Blackwood and, after the two-ace response, he settles for 6 – a fantastic slam on just 23 HCP.
Now that auction was quite frightening because there could have been a worry that one or other of the partnership thought the spade bids were natural. Why isn't the 3 bid natural?
A 1 rebid would have shown a normal hand; a 2 rebid would have shown a strong hand; so a 3 rebid is not needed. It is for this reason that a double jump can be used as a splinter bid.
Over 4, it is just a question of partnership trust!
