HAND EVALUATION 4

Opening with Balanced Hands
Part 4 of 5
by Bernard Magee

A rebid of 2NT over a two-level suit response shows 15-19 points

The 2NT rebid after a two-level response can work in a similar way, leaving space to explore. In an auction such as 1 – 2 – 2NT, the 2 bid should show a minimum of about 10 points. This means that between the two hands you would have a minimum of 25 points, which in turn means that game should be on and your side should keep bidding until game is reached. This enables you to take your time to find the best contract and, with the extra space available, you should be able to do just that. Because the 2NT rebid is game-forcing, it makes sense to use it to show 15-19 points so that you do not have to jump to 3NT with 18-19 points.

For example:

In old-fashioned Acol the auction would probably have been 1 – 2 – 3NT – End. Once again the new auction proceeds at an unhurried pace, with both players participating in the decision-making. West is able to show his 19 points by rebidding only 2NT, which is forcing to game. Now East is able to express both his worry about the spade suit and his real interest in playing in a minor-suit contract, by rebidding 3 . West can see that there is a weakness in spades so, with support for both minors, he is happy to settle for a minor-suit game. Both 5 and 5 are excellent contracts, whilst 3NT will be defeated on a spade lead.
