HAND EVALUATION 46

Hand Evaluation in Slams

Part 1 of 7

by Bernard Magee

This section is not aimed at dealing with slams and the bidding of them; that is a whole new subject to be dealt with in a future book. However, what I do intend to consider is how the evaluation techniques seen so far can help at slam level.

For the majority of players, the most difficult aspect of slam bidding is not so much the final bidding, but the envisaging that slam might be a possibility. How do you know when to bid past game?

The Losing Trick Count can be a great help in this area of bidding, telling you whether a slam might be on so that you should make further enquiries by using Blackwood or cue-bidding. Remember that the LTC does not tell you when a slam is making, but it does point you in the right direction.

Learning how to interpret a good, long auction can help too. By listening to your partner's bids and working out how they affect your own hand, you will sometimes be able to increase the value of your hand and bid to a slam because your two hands fit together particularly well. An example of this would be when your partner bids three suits. This is not a particularly common occurrence, but, when it does happen, it is surely logical that he will be short in the other suit. You will have seen that shortage can be a very powerful tool in suit contracts and knowing how it fits together with your hand is even more important. By considering your holding in partner's known short suit, you can reassess your hand. This is a topic that arose in the chapter on game-tries (Chapter 7), where shortage opposite a weakness was identified as a great asset that allowed games to be bid and made on slender values.

The final subject I will cover takes this idea of showing shortage one step further. Because it is such a powerful tool in assessing a partnership's trick-taking potential, it has to be a great asset to be able to show your shortage on an early round of the auction. 'Splinter Bids' are a method for doing just this: they enable you to show a singleton (or void) along with support for your partner.

Before considering hand evaluation in slams, I would like to make a short mention of Key-card Blackwood. It is very important, if you want to improve your slam bidding, to use a form of Blackwood that includes the king of trumps in its responses; this is because the king of trumps is as important as an ace. You would not want to bid a slam missing two aces nor would you want to bid a slam missing an ace and the king of trumps.

The easiest method of including the king of trumps is Key-card Blackwood (KCB), where a 4NT enquiry asks partner how many 'key-cards' he holds. The key-cards are the four aces and the king of trumps; they are called 'key' cards because they are all vitally important for making a slam. The responses are very similar to normal Blackwood, the only difference being the rare chance that 5 might show all five key cards.

I hope you agree that, since the responses are very similar to the original Blackwood, there is not too much new to learn – only that the trump suit is your agreed suit or, if there is no agreement, then it is the last bid suit.

I will expand on this convention in a future book, but for the sake of this section, let's settle it that this is the form of Blackwood I will be using.
