HAND EVALUATION 37

Game Tries
Part 5 of 6
by Bernard Magee

2NT as a GAME TRY

There is, of course, one spare bid that can be used for a game try, 2NT, and this can certainly come in handy when you have a very strong but very balanced hand, which appears to be weak in terms of its number of losers, but is surely strong in terms of high-card points (17-18):

Hand A is strong, but count up the losers: 7. In theory this is a minimum hand, so that when you open 1 and your partner raises to 2, you might even pass! However, with such extreme high-card strength, you would be loath to pass and instead would prefer to tell your partner exactly the type of hand you have. The 2NT rebid after a raise of a major shows a very strong balanced hand, which feels that game might be on, but is so flat and has so many losers, that the no-trump game might be as likely as the major game. If partner is distributional, he goes back to the suit contract, bidding 3 or 4 depending on his strength, but if he too is very flat he could leave the contract in no-trumps, either passing or raising to 3NT.

The minimum strength for this type of 2NT rebid is a 'good' 17 points and the maximum is a 'bad' 19 points – these adjectives are discussed in detail in Chapter 8. With 16 HCP and a very flat hand, 2 is probably far enough, while with a reasonable 19 HCP, you can rebid 3NT rather than 2NT to suggest that game is definitely on and offering the choice of no-trumps or hearts.

Here are some layouts (9-11) where different East hands are paired up with Hand A. In each case the bidding starts 1 - 2 - 2NT.

With such distribution hearts is certainly best and, since he is very weak in high-card points (without an ace or king), East should settle for 3.

The distribution still suggests a heart contract, but here East has enough strength to go for 4 - his jacks will be strengthened by West's honours.

As flat as West, East should certainly stick to no-trumps and, with his 9 points, he should go on to game: 3NT. Because the hands are so flat, the partnership will be making the same number of tricks in 4 as they will in 3NT, so playing in the nine-trick game will be much better.
