"הערכת היד – ספירת לקיחות מפסידות – צעד נוסף קדימה" – כתבה חמישית (אנגלית) מאת גבי לוי

פורסם בתאריך 20/12/2011.

אנו שמחים לפרסם את הכתבה החמישית (מתוך 6)  בנושא  Weak no trump - " הערכת היד – ספירת לקיחות מפסידות – צעד נוסף קדימה"  -  "The Losing Trick Count A Step Further " (המקור: mrbridge).

WEAK NO-TRUMP

I have tried to emphasise the minimum number of losers for an opening suit-bid: 7. However, in Acol, most of your weakest opening hands will be opened with 1NT. Because these hands are so flat, as well as containing the minimum point count, they will often be weaker than any other opening bid.

For example:

This hand is a perfectly normal 1NT opener, but a quick count of the losers will give you a nasty surprise – 9 losers for an opening bid! (Suit openings are stronger because, either they are based on a distributional hand or, if the hand is balanced, it will have 15 or more points.) Hand C shows a good reason for not counting your losers when opening the bidding; remember the LTC comes into play only when you have a fit.

What is important is that, when responding to a weak no-trump, you should bear in mind that your partner might have a few more losers than you expect:

East has a perfect hand for a Stayman response to 1NT and West shows four spades. Now it would be easy for East to get excited: having found a 4-4 fit he counts his losers – 7 – and might think that that is enough for game, but remember that the weak no-trump tends to live up to its name – 'weak'!

It is best to assume that a weak no-trump will have 7 or 8 losers, so if you have 7 losers yourself you will only be able to make game if your partner has 7 too; hence you should invite your partner to game by bidding 3.

Now West counts his losers; if he has 7, he should go on to game, but on this occasion he has 8½ losers and should certainly pass3 .

Change the West hand a little, as in Layout 6:

Now West has 7 losers and can raise to game with confidence.

JACK-TEN in a SUIT

The LTC does not take jacks into account, so sometimes your hand can be undervalued because of this. The reason they are overlooked is because a jack by itself is pretty weak, but put it with a ten and it can make a big difference to a suit. For this reason, you should look favourably on a jack-ten holding: it is a good sign if the suit is four-cards or longer, but it is even better if the jack-ten is alongside a king or an ace, when you should certainly take half a loser off. A-J-10 and K-J-10 are excellent holdings in a suit, and grant extra chances for tricks.

In the point-count system, it is the tens that get missed out; just like the jacks in the LTC, it is important to make up for those tens, as I will explain later.
